Job Description:

Under the direction of laboratory manager and senior staff, conducts routine and non-routine analysis of samples via various methodologies to identify and/or confirm sample quality and/or variation

Job Responsibilities:

  • Individual will perform laboratory tests and assist in the analysis of samples
  • Calibrate, operate, maintain and  troubleshoot instrumentation and equipment in the laboratory
  • Collect, reduce and evaluate data
  • Enter data into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Prepare various reports and assist in procedural development and modification
  • Analyze and evaluate technical problems, develop experimental outlines and schedule analyses
  • Develop new and revised procedures and techniques
  • Help prepare reagents, standards and stock chemicals as needed
  • Perform routine housekeeping jobs to support overall cleanliness of the laboratory
  • Use basic laboratory equipment such as pipettes balances, hotplates, ovens and furnaces to perform lab tasks
  • Must follow written procedures and function independently after proper training
  • Job requires work with beryllium and radioactive contamination

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or physical sciences
  • OR master’s degree in chemistry or physical sciences

  • Experience in the field of inorganic environmental analysis is required
  • Experience in regulatory  environmental and industrial hygiene analyses and satisfactory knowledge of regulatory analytical testing methodology (Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements: Clean Water Act, National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), SW-846, American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) methodology
  • Qualification, training and experience in environmental and industrial hygiene laboratory techniques
  • Familiarity with ion chromatography (IC), flow injection spectroscopy,titrimetric (acidity, alkalinity) and electrometric (conductivity, pH, ion selective electrode) techniques, cold vapor atomic abosprtion spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and optical emission spectroscopty
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2 (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related science, 2 years job-related and at least 1 year nuclear experience, or a DOE O 426.2 alternative).  DOE 426.2 experience requirements can be satisfied following employment.  In the interim, newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities.   (Ref.
